Retail media: proof of play is not proof of attention

Define the event before reporting the result.

THE DIRECT ANSWER

For a retail-media network, define what a playback record proves and what it does not. A logged player event does not establish that someone saw an advertisement. Agree screen identity, creative identity, timestamps, error handling and report exports. Keep playback reporting, device health and any audience measurement as distinct scopes with separate evidence.

Write the reporting definition into the brief

Ask the provider which event creates a proof-of-play entry. It might represent a player action rather than the display’s visible state. Record device ID, content ID, time zone, event outcome and the conditions that produce an error. Agree how missing records, duplicated records and offline uploads are handled. A useful report states its limitations, allowing the buyer and the operator to interpret the same evidence consistently.

Separate campaign control from measurement

Plan approval, start and end dates, screen groups and the procedure for an urgent removal. Confirm that a local replacement campaign cannot accidentally overwrite contracted content elsewhere. Decide which report a commercial team receives and which operational details remain restricted. Audience measurement, if proposed, needs its own method, permissions and privacy review; a playback log alone cannot substantiate impressions, unique viewers or sales attribution.

Use failures to test the reporting promise

In a test group, schedule known content and introduce a controlled connection outage. Compare the expected events with exported records after recovery. If the CMS reports a player online while the screen input is wrong, note the difference rather than treating both signals as equivalent. Agree the incident owner and how a corrected report is issued. Retain an exportable audit trail so disputed campaigns can be reviewed without relying only on a dashboard screenshot.

Procurement checklist

  • Agree the precise event definition.
  • Require exportable records.
  • Separate health and audience claims.
  • Test missing and delayed events.
VERIFY IN PRACTICE

A practical acceptance task

Create a known test schedule with an expected list of events. Compare it with the exported log after a controlled outage and restore. Document any mismatch and the supplier’s explanation; do not approve an attention claim from this test.
