Glossary
Thirty working definitions. Use them to clarify a brief, not to replace a model’s documentation.
30 terms
- Pro AV
- An audiovisual system planned around presentation, sound, collaboration and control tasks. List presentation, audio and control tasks before choosing equipment.
- Digital signage
- Scheduled or managed information presented on a screen network. Include the publishing workflow and responsibility, not only the displays.
- Commercial display
- A display offered for business use. The exact model documentation determines its permitted operating conditions; the category name does not.
- Outdoor display
- A display system intended for external exposure. Confirm the approved enclosure, mounting and thermal configuration for the proposed site.
- High brightness
- A relative description, not a universal acceptance level. Ask for the stated luminance, conditions and a readability demonstration.
- Nit
- An informal name for luminance of one candela per square metre (cd/m²). It describes luminance, not complete on-site visibility.
Unit reference · IES ↗ - Ambient light
- Light in the viewing environment. Observe changes through the day and reflections at the reader’s position.
- Glare
- Light or reflections that interfere with comfortable viewing. Evaluate the installed surface from the actual audience positions.
- IP rating
- An enclosure protection classification addressed by IEC 60529. Check the assembly and evidence; do not infer thermal suitability from the code.
- Thermal management
- The design and operation used to keep a system within its approved conditions. Review solar exposure, airflow and the complete enclosure.
- Duty cycle
- The intended pattern or duration of operation. Confirm it in the offered model’s documentation and warranty conditions.
- CMS
- Software for organizing, approving and scheduling content. Device health and remote control may require separate capabilities or licenses.
- Media player
- The hardware or software that renders content at a display. Verify the proposed format, application and offline behavior.
- Playlist
- An ordered set of content items. Agree timing, expiry, fallback and the treatment of items that fail to load.
- Scheduling
- Rules that decide when and where content appears. Test time-zone, expiry and urgent-override behavior.
- Offline playback
- Playback that continues without the publishing connection. Verify which cached assets remain available and what happens when they expire.
- Remote monitoring
- Reporting of defined device or player signals. Each signal needs an interpretation, owner and response.
- Device management
- Inventory, configuration and service actions for hardware. Keep these permissions separate from routine content publishing.
- Proof of play
- A record of a defined playback event. It does not by itself prove display visibility, viewer attention or audience size.
- Wayfinding
- Helping someone reach a destination through consistent information and routes. Test arrival, not only the map’s appearance.
- Kiosk
- A fixed information or interaction point. Plan reach, access, reset, maintenance and an alternative for non-touch use.
- Touch display
- A display with an input surface. Confirm the touch path and software compatibility separately from the video connection.
- LCD
- A liquid-crystal display technology. Evaluate the offered panel’s actual content, viewing conditions and operating limits.
- Direct-view LED
- An emitting display surface assembled from LED modules. Compare the proposed pixel arrangement, processing and service access.
- Video wall
- A display surface formed from coordinated screens or modules. Include seams, alignment, signal processing and replacement in evaluation.
- Pixel pitch
- The spacing between adjacent pixels. Judge the proposed layout with real content at the required viewing distance.
- Signal path
- The route from an input device, such as a laptop or media player, to the display or audio output. Document connections, switching and ownership at each boundary.
- Acceptance test
- An agreed demonstration or measurement against project requirements. Define the witness, result and exception process before delivery.
- Total cost of ownership
- The purchase and ongoing cost scope agreed for comparison. Include licenses, installation, maintenance and replacement assumptions.
- RFQ
- A request for quotation against a defined scope. List the site checks still to complete and ask suppliers to state assumptions, exclusions and supporting evidence.
